Janani Ramachandran, a 30-year-old Indian-American lawyer, has emerged as the youngest and first lesbian woman of color to be sworn in as a member of the Oakland City Council in the US state of California. Ramachandran was formally sworn in as the Oakland City Council member for District 4, wearing a sari, at an inauguration ceremony held on January 10. member in Oakland's history, the first #LGBTQ woman of color and the first South Asian to serve on the Oakland City Council," the public interest attorney tweeted.

Ramachandran describes herself as "the daughter of immigrants from a small village in South India". Ramachandran currently serves on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs and previously served as a commissioner on the City of Oakland Public Ethics Commission, according to his website. The Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley pass-out has worked in several legal non-profits. As a first-time candidate for the state assembly in 2021, he surprised political experts by leading the upcoming special election runoff. His website said former elected officials are at the top of the field.
